You got me thinking about where our Decipher My Data project fits in. (flu.deciphermydata.org.uk) - a mix of the two I think.

There is Story Vis in that we illustrate rates of flu in the community, but also Answer Vis in that we ask schools to upload their absence data and analyze it within the context of the national and regional data.

Thanks for this thought provoking post Tom. The distinction you're making makes sense, although how more complex forms of interactive data viz (the kind that allows for both stories and answers to come through using a viz) fit into on or the other of these 'camps' is less clear.
