The real potential for the net is in political fund raising. Democracy has largely been hijacked by those with money - the rich can chuck a few million in loose change at any cause that takes their fancy. In many instances those causes are designed to protect their particular interest. The problem has always been how do you fund political movements that undermine the wealthy? The net has the potential to generate lots of funds from small donations - one billionaire can chuck a million at a cause, it will take about 250,000 people each making a small contribution to raise that sort of cash. Without the net the size of the organization required to connect with 250,000 people makes the project self defeating; with the net it becomes a real possibility
